Plus Size Clothing Caters For Athletes

There are some very big men in the world today, and nowhere is there a greater concentration than in regimented world of the professional sumo wrestler.

A sport almost exclusively confined to Japan, the sumo wrestler's ideal height is below six feet  but bulk is very important and their weight is generally well in excess of 120kilos.

The object of the bout is to force one's opponent out of the dohyo, the circular ring whose boundary is a thick rope, or to make the opponent touch the ground with anything other than his bare feet. The dohyo is a raised platform above the spectators, a clay and sand based surface raised on bales. The pre fight routines follow a strict procedure and take some time while the bout itself may only last seconds.

Many centuries old, probably dating back to the 16th Century, sumo wrestling is strictly ritualized both in the lifestyle of its wrestlers and the procedures followed prior to, during, and after a bout.

In the ring, the wrestler merely wears a mawashi, a very stiff and rigid leather based garment wrapped between the legs and around the rather large waist.

In public, there is a special garment that the wrestler wears which indicates to the public that he is a sumo wrestler, though his size would be a good indication in itself. Plus size clothing is definitely needed for these giant men.

There are six divisions in the professional form of sumo, with wrestlers able to be promoted through the ranks, and also being relegated in the event of poor performance.

The yokozuna is the highest rank, and there can be more than one yokozuna at any one time. To retain that rank, the yokozuna is expected to be a regular winner of tournaments, known as honbashos. These are the only tournaments which count towards a wrestler's ranking, even though exhibition matches take place, mostly overseas when travelling in plus size clothing, a stable takes its sport to neighbouring countries.

Three of the six annual honbashos take place in the Japanese Capital, Tokyo, with one each in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. They run for fifteen days, beginning in the morning and finishing in the early evening.

The winners at the end of tournaments may receive various prizes depending on the sponsorship that tournament receives but while the life of the top level in the sport is fairly comfortable, if strict, the trainees in the sport have an early start each morning, have to work within the stable on the chores of maintaining that stable. They receive little more than accommodation and food though the food is plentiful because of the need to gain and maintain weight.

It is not a sport with weight divisions, and smaller men with speed can sometimes overcome the huge men of the sport, but that is an exception. They are mighty men these sumo wrestlers and revered within Japanese Society.
